College of the North Atlantic

College of the North Atlantic is the only public college in Newfoundland and Labrador and is governed by the Colleges Act 1996. The college's Board of Governors is appointed by Cabinet.

The Board is responsible for carrying out those duties prescribed by Section 15 (1) of the Act. These powers include general administrative, academic, and governance functions. Section 16 of the Act further empowers the Board to carry out a wide variety of discretionary functions including various human resource management, student services, and corporate and educational partnership activities. Sections 17 through 25 prescribe the Board's accountability for the administration of the college's finances.

The President of the college is appointed by Cabinet. The President is the Chief Executive Officer of the college, and, under the general direction of the Board, is responsible for the supervision and administration of the college and of the instructional staff and other employees of the college.

Collaboration is at the core of CNA's mandate. It knows the partnerships with provincial and federal governments, industry, other educational institutions, communities, agencies and many others, will help CNA thrive. They will also assist in supporting the strategic directions set by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador that are applicable to the college, namely developing a qualified and skilled workforce that meets the province's skilled labour needs, and improving post-secondary programs and public post-secondary institutions to benefit students and the province.

Through its Corporate Training and Continuing Education division, College of the North Atlantic offers customized training designed to meet the needs of any business or organization. Curriculum is custom designed to meet the specific training goals of the client. From a one-day session to programs of several weeks, training can be delivered anytime, on-site or offsite with the appropriate training infrastructure and resources. Business Development Officers are located strategically throughout all 17 campuses to provide access to experts for the development of training to meet client needs.

Memorial University

Memorial University is the only university in Newfoundland and Labrador and the largest university in Atlantic Canada.

It is made up of a campus in St. John's; the Fisheries and Marine Institute in St. John's; Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook; a residential campus in Harlow, England; and the Institut Frecker in St. Pierre.

The university is governed by the Memorial University Act.

The government deals directly with the university on budgetary matters and policy matters, however the Board of Regents has a wide latitude in most operational areas. It is appointed under the Memorial University Act and is responsible for the management, administration, and control of the property, revenue, business and affairs of the university.

The university has full power and authority to: establish and maintain such faculties, colleges, schools, institutions, departments, chairs, and courses as the Board of Regents may deem necessary; give instruction and training in all branches of knowledge and learning, including physical instruction and training; grant degrees (including honorary degrees), diplomas, and certificates of proficiency; provide facilities for original research in every branch of knowledge and learning and to conduct and carry on such research; and, generally, promote and carry on the work of a university in all its branches.

Sir Wilfred Grenfell College offers the first year in all programs offered by Memorial University (except music), the first one or two years of most professional and non-professional university degree programs, and the entire four years for the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts), Bachelor of Fine Arts (Theatre) degrees, Bachelor of Arts, and Bachelor of Science.

In March 1992, the Institute of Fisheries and Marine Technology was affiliated with Memorial University as the Marine Institute of Memorial University . The legislation which was enacted charged the university to provide: degree, diploma, certificate and other programs in the areas of fisheries and marine science and technology, and; upgrading and enhancing of the fisheries and marine labour force in cooperation with the colleges.
